Steve BonDurant

“ Try to give people a different way of looking at their surroundings. That’s art to me.” ~Maya Lin

Humans experience with ultimate perception—the sense of sight, coupled with the inevitable engagement of the other senses, seeking to feel, hear, touch, smell, and even taste. To capture a view in paint and engage senses is what every artist pursues. Establishing an emotional connection for the viewer brings tremendous satisfaction.

To capture the glimpse that made him want to paint it is motivational to Steve BonDurant when going out with his easel. With senses engaged, the scene builds as the study from the thumbnail evolves into the block-in and underpainting, eventually revealed as the final strokes produce the scene. “What appeals to the human eye, to develop an emotional connection is a lifelong pursuit.” To evaluate a potential painting subject and see it painted in the mind’s eye can contribute to developing a sense of being, to evoke a memory, or to remind the viewer of a favorite place. Steve brings his easel nearly everywhere he travels, hoping for a painting opportunity, and his favorite place to paint is the next place.
